The following projects were done for an honors course called Lights Academy. Lights Academy goes beyond the traditional class structure; students are often in control of the study of a project and its process. It allows for specialization within a specific area should a student choose to do so. Click each link to view the project.
Project 1: Coors Field Questioning
This project involved 360 degree questioning, which means asking questions about an organization or event from all standpoints. Our class took a trip to Coors Field in Denver and asked questions from all sorts of perspectives, including security in the stadium, concession prices, uniforms, the configuration of the ballpark, and many more. I was asked to select 10 questions that interested me and answer them to the fullest extent I was able.
Project 2: Problem Solving
This project involved solving a problem in the community. The problem I selected was that the legacy of Denver Lutheran is dying out and becoming less known by newer families of Lutheran High School. Solving this problem involved a lot of discussing with staff members at Lutheran, and they were all in agreement that this is an issue that needs to be corrected. I talked to Mr. Bredow and Mr. Gherke because they both worked at Denver Lutheran for several years. Mr. Bredow inspired me to take the path of creating a did-you-know type of presentation. Mr. Gherke provided the archives that were used in this project, specifically the photographs and the information. Clicking the link "Problem Solving" will take you to my final project.
Project 3: Baseball Field Proposal for Lutheran High School
In this project, I tasked myself with going through what it would take for Lutheran High School to construct a baseball field on campus. For years the school has rented the facilities of Double Angel Ball Field to run both practices and games, but as the cost increases this space is becoming more of a hassle to use than a blessing. In my proposal, I took a look at what land related issues must be overcome in order to make this project realistic, which involved a land purchase as well as looking at possible flooding caused by Newlin Gulch. I also researched approximate pricing for all elements on the field of play, including fences, grass and turf, dirt for the infield and other things. In total, I spent over five hours researching as well as conducting interviews with those who have experience in this process. Clicking the link below will take you to my final proposal document.
Project 4: The History of Football Equipment and its Effects on Aesthetics
This project took place over the month of November. I was tasked with creating a project based on my interests by coming up with a driving question. My driving question was, how have the changes in the sport of football and football equipment changed how a graphic designer does their job? As a part of this project, I had to create checkpoints in order to track my progress with the product. These checkpoints primarily involved research on the history of football, how equipment has been made better, and how the design of a football team can effect their on-field product. Project: The Future of Space Exploration
This was a group project over the course of the third quarter where I worked with two other students on a project we chose together. I had to learn how to work together with multiple people and hold each other accountable, rather than just taking care of myself and my own individual project. Our project involved the future of space exploration and what that would look like. We also had to conduct two interviews as a part of our project in order to come out with more authentic research.
